Graduate Fellowship Description
The successful applicant will be a member of the CLSI Experimental Facilities Division reporting to the Beamline Scientist of the SXRMB beamline, Dr. Yongfeng Hu. They will also be part of a University of Saskatchewan and University of Alberta Research Group studying oxidation catalysts for methane oxidation and will work closely with Dr. Robert Scott (USask) and Dr. Natalia Semagina (Alberta). The successful candidate is expected to take a major role in:
Developing and applying new synchrotron techniques related to the characterization of nanostructured catalysts under in situ conditions.
Developing nanomaterials related to methane oxidation catalysis and characterization of these materials using synchrotron and non-synchrotron techniques.
Assisting in the normal operation of the beamline, which includes providing training and support to users.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree within the last 2-3 years or are expected to receive their degree in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Engineering in the near future. The ideal applicant should have experience in advanced techniques and instrumentation including transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), soft X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) and/or extended X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (EXAFS), as well as synthesis of nanostructured materials for catalysis. Applicants should have good publication record. Prior experience running experiments at beamlines with synchrotron-related experiments is preferred. Ability to communicate results, independence and self-motivation are desired. Working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is a requirement of the position.
