The high-energy physics group at McGill University invites applications for a scientist position to lead the development and operation of a particle detector characterization facility at McGill University. As part of an upgrade to the ATLAS detector at the CERN laboratory, large area gaseous multi-wire chambers (thin gap chambers (TGCs) for the muon subdetector system) are to be built in Canada and fully characterized at McGill University, prior to their shipment to the CERN laboratory in Switzerland.
The successful applicant should have extensive experience in particle detector development and operation, or demonstrate strong potential to develop the required technical abilities. Responsibilities will include:
Laboratory facility design, construction and operation.
Day-to-day supervision of undergraduate and graduate students working in the laboratory.
Liaison to collaborating research groups worldwide.
Ability to organize, set priorities and obtain results are required. The successful candidate should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work efficiently as a member of a large team. Demonstrated management and administrative skills are also an asset.
To qualify, the candidate should have a PhD in Experimental High Energy Physics or equivalent experience relevant to the project, and have demonstrated strong potential for outstanding achievement as an independent researcher. The successful candidate is to be based in Montreal. Appointment, either at the postdoctoral or research associate level, and salary will be commensurate with the applicant's experience. The initial appointment is for 1 year, renewable for up to 3 years upon mutual agreement.
Interested applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, description of research experience, list of publications and provide the name and contact information of three references through the online application system at
Review of applications will begin 1st July 2013, and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Email inquiries should be directed to Prof. Franc?ois Corriveau ([email protected]).
All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. McGill University is committed to diversity and equity in employment.
