Graduate Degree & Funding description
The PhD degree can be pursued on a part-time or full-time basis.
The PhD program is open to students holding an MSc (or equivalent) in an area relevant to the proposed program in Vision Science. Students for whom English is not the first language, must meet language requirements (see Graduate Studies Calendar - Academic Regulations - English Language Proficiency Certification). Vision Science requires a TOEFL score of 580 (237 on the computer version).
Students are admitted on a rolling basis but it is recommended applications to the Doctoral program be submitted approximately 6 months before the beginning of the term the student wishes to register in. International students should also take into consideration the length of time required to obtain a Study Permit.

University of Waterloo (UW) Graduate Scholarships
The University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarships are disbursed by departments/units normally to graduate students registered full-time with a first-class (80%) standing. The awards may be given as UW Graduate Entrance scholarships, UW Merit Scholarships or UW Scholarships. These awards are normally paid across three terms. The minimum value of the award is normally $1,000 per term, but may vary.Minimum funding for doctoral students
The minimum level of financial support provided for doctoral students is reviewed annually by the Provosts Advisory Committee on Minimum Doctoral Funding. Effective May 1, 2013, the University of Waterloo annual minimum level of financial support for doctoral students is $20,600. This commitment applies to the first three years of full-time enrolment in a doctoral program.
Minimum funding for masters research students*
Effective May 1, 2012, the guideline for minimum funding is $12,000 for incoming full-time masters students in the first year of a MA, MFA, MES, MMath, MASc, or MSc program (non-co-op). The continuation of funding throughout the first year requires full-time registration and good academic standing.
