Graduate Scholarship Description
For students currently enrolled full time in a doctoral program, second or third year, in the natural sciences pursuing northern research.
Applications are invited from candidates engaged in a natural science program leading to a thesis who demonstrate exceptional promise academic excellence, and through their actions an vision, a strong commitment to northern research.
Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
Scholarship awarded on basis of :
Academic record, research ability, leadership skills, potential benefit of the research, referees’ reports, and the applicants’ interest in, and commitment to, the north and northern studies.
Additional important information
Applications are invited from candidates engaged in a natural science program leading to a thesis who demonstrate exceptional promise, academic excellence, and leadership, a strong commitment to northern research.
Preference will be given to applicants who
(a) have a clearly defined research project that includes significant research time spent in the Canadian north
(b) demonstrate excellence in northern research
(c) show the relevance of the research to northerners and northern scholarship and (d) exhibit a willingness to communicate research results within the scientific community, and in northern or national meetings.
Award recipients are identified in May. Only successful candidates will be notified. The scholarship covers a twenty-three month period of study. Payment will be issued in six installments, contingent upon registration, and is to be used as stipend.
Proof of registration and two progress reports are required.

Candidates must be in the second or third year of a doctoral program.
Candidates who have transferred their registration from a Masters to a PhD will be considered to have started their PhD program when they registered for the Masters program.
Candidates who transfer their registration from MSc to PhD and who hold or have held The W. Garfield Weston Award for Northern Research at the Masters level will be eligible for only one further year of support ($20,000) if their application is successful.
At the time of the receipt of the award, applicants must have received approval of their research proposal, including any required ethical review and /or research license, and have successfully completed their comprehensive examinations.
